Dante Alighieri (1265–1321)
Dante Alighieri (dän’te äl-ē-gyā’rē). The greatest of Italian poets; born at Florence in May 1265; died in Ravenna, Sept. 14, 1321. His chief works are: ‘Poems’; ‘The New Life’; ‘The Banquet’; ‘On Monarchy’; ‘On Vernacular Eloquence’; and ‘The Divine Comedy.’ (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
