Egill Skallagrímsson (Tenth Century)
Egill Skallagrimsson (ā’gēl skäl”lä-grēm’sōn). A celebrated Icelandic skald of the tenth century, who did heroic deeds as well as sung of them. The ‘Egillsaga’ is reputed to belong to the thirteenth century, but contains several indisputably genuine compositions of Egill; including the song of ‘The Life (or Head) Redeemed,’ which placated King Athelstan when resolved to put the rover to death; the lament for ‘His Son’s Death’; the song in ‘Praise of Arinbjörn.’
