Gilbert White (1720–1793)

White, Gilbert. An English clergyman and naturalist; born at Selborne, July 18, 1720; died there, June 26, 1793. He wrote: ‘The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne in the County of Southampton’ (1789); and a posthumous work edited from his papers, ‘The Naturalist’s Calendar, with Observations in Various Branches of Natural History’ (1795). His ‘Letters’ were published in 1876. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
