Jean-Baptiste Massillon (1663–1742)
Massillon, Jean Baptiste (mä-sē-yô
‘). A famous French preacher; born at Hyères, June 24, 1663; died at Clermont, Sept. 18, 1742. He preached the funeral orations on Conti in 1709, the Dauphin in 1711, and Louis XIV. in 1715; became bishop of Clermont in 1717. His sermons are finished in form, and deal with conduct more than dogma. (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
