John Gower (1325?–1408)
Gower, John. An English poet; born in Kent about 1325; died at London, in Aug. or Sept. 1408. ‘Mirror of Meditation’ (Speculum Meditantis) in French; ‘Voice of One Crying’ (Vox Clamantis) in Latin; and ‘Lover’s Confession’ (Confessio Amantis), a collection of 112 stories well told in correct, if somewhat monotonous verse, are his principal works. He wrote also in French ‘Cinkante Balades’ and in Latin ‘Cronica Tripertita.’ (See Critical and Biographical Introduction).
