Richard Robert Madden (1798–1886)
Madden, Richard Robert. An English physician and miscellaneous writer; born in Ireland, 1798; died in 1886. He was prominent in the English antislavery cause. He wrote: ‘Travels in Turkey’ (2d. ed. 1833); ‘The Musulman,’ a tale; ‘The Infirmities of Genius’ (1833); ‘Life of Savonarola’ (2d ed. 1854); ‘Life and Correspondence of the Countess of Blessington’ (2d ed. 1855); ‘The United Irishmen, their Lives and Times’ (4 vols., 1857–60), his great work.
