William Mathews (1818–1909)

Mathews, William. An American essayist; born in Waterville, ME, July 28, 1818; died on Feb. 14, 1909. Resigned the professorship of rhetoric and English literature in the University of Chicago (1875) to devote his time entirely to literary work. His publications include: ‘Getting on in the World’ (1872); ‘The Great Conversers, and Other Essays’ (1873); ‘Literary Style, and Other Essays’ (1881); ‘Wit and Humor, their Use and Abuse’; and ‘Nugæ Litterariæ’; ‘Conquering Success’ (1903).
