Frank J. Wilstach, comp. A Dictionary of Similes. 1916.

Thomas Yalden

Fair as beams of light.

Gay as the spring.

Injurious as the tainted breath of fame.

Love, like ambition, dies as ’tis enjoyed.

Wishes, like painted landscapes, best delight,
Whilst distance recommends them to the sight.
Placed far off, they beautiful appear;
But show their coarse and nauseous colours, near.
