Leon

By Robert Southey (1774–1843)

(From Written on Christmas Day, 1795)

A WEARY traveller now

I journey o’er the desert mountain track

Of Leon: wilds all drear and comfortless,

Where the gray lizards in the noontide sun,

Sport on their rocks, and where the goatherd starts,

Roused from his midnight sleep, and shakes to hear

The wolf’s loud yell, and falters as he calls

On saints to save.
