Fear

Evelyn Scott

From “Tropical Life”

MY soul leaps up at a sound.

What is the question I cannot answer,

That must be answered?

What is the blank face I must fill in with features?

My brain pulls, stretches, tears;

But I cannot open wide enough to see!

Always at the agonized point of conception,

But never conceiving.

Always giving birth,

But never born!

What is it I am to conceive?

To what must I give birth?
