How to Get a Nursing License?

Before we delve into online nursing programs, let's look into the requirements to practice nursing.

A nursing license is a permission of practice granted by the State Board of Nursing to applicants who fulfill the necessary requirements to qualify as a Registered Nurse (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

Nursing License Requirements

The basic requirement for a nursing applicant to be eligible for a license are:

  • Be a graduate from state-approved, accredited nursing programs (either ADN or BSN). After graduating, the applicant will qualify to appear for the next level of exams.

  • Apply for and pass the NCLEX-PN exam for LPNs and NCLEX-RN exam for the RNs after submitting proof of graduation and the college transcript

  • Self-report any disability to perform job functions, prior criminal records if any, and dependencies on drugs

 How to Apply

  • Submit an application to the respective state’s Board of Nursing Regulatory body (BON/RB) on the NCSBN site to get your eligibility approved

  • Qualify for eligibility to take the NCLEX with the above approval

  • Register for NCLEX on PearsonVUE by paying a non-refundable registration fee of $200. The registration is valid for 365 days.

  • Take the exam once you get your BON/RB eligibility approval

  • Get results in about six weeks after the exam. If you fail, you can retake the test after 45 days.

Nursing licenses are issued by the State and must be renewed every 2 years from the date of issuance, except for in Arizona and Iowa where it’s valid for 4 years and 3 years respectively.

Online Certificates in Nursing

Why run behind a degree when online certificate courses can do the trick for you?

Nursing is a demanding profession that requires a lot of time, effort, and energy from its practitioners. Registered Nurses or professionals working in the field of nursing often look up to online nursing degrees to zoom ahead in their careers. But since it takes a lot of time for completion and requires immense dedication, online nursing programs are not every RN’s cup of tea.

Online certificate courses in nursing are perfect for busy nursing professionals and RNs as it requires way lesser time for completion compared to degree programs. Even students currently studying BSN can enroll for online certificate courses. Online nursing certificate courses are non-degree programs that focus on a key area of nursing such as research or patient care. These courses help students earn specialization certificates. Some online certificate courses in nursing do not require clinical practice and thus can be fully completed online.

Online certificates in nursing are widely accepted by hospitals and medical institutions.  Many renowned universities such as George Washington University, University of Connecticut, and University of Pittsburgh offer online certificates in nursing. Online certificate courses are a student’s springboard to a successful nursing career.
