MAE 251 test 1 review sheet (material we have covered) Please review this outline and come to class prepared with questions. I’ll have a basic overview of material Anatomy of an airplane o Understand the basic components that make up an airplane and be able to describe what their purpose is on the airplane Fundamentals of physical quantities o Pressure o Temperature o Density o Equation of state The standard atmosphere o How is the standard atmosphere defined o Understanding the types of layers Isothermal Gradient region o Types of altitude Geometric Absolute Geopotential What is the difference between them How to convert between the three o How is each quantity calculated at altitudes? (Pressure, Temperature, Density) o Standard sea level properties o Other important atmospheric properties and how they are calculated Different types of flight and important performance parameters o What are aircraft parameters Angle of attack Pitch angle Lift – Drag – Weight – Thrust Understand how these are related in different flight conditions o Cruise flight (SLUF – steady level unaccelerated flight) How angle of attack and velocity interact Angle of attack and pitch angle How wind effects flight path and be able to calculate Range and endurance Calculating flight times o Climb Rate of climb Angle of climb How they are affected by wind o Descent Similar to climb – also have gliding flight under descent
Understanding how pitch angle, angle of attack, and climb angle change Calculate different parameters with and without wind and how wind affects these parameters o Turning flight What are performance parameters o Takeoff Definition of roll and takeoff distance How these are affected by wind o Landing Similar to takeoff, but with regards to landing Anatomy of a rocket o Basic understanding of the anatomy of a rocket Multistage burns in powered flight trajectory Basics of orbital mechanics (will be very simple “conceptual” type questions and basic calcs) o Be able to describe difference between the types of trajectories (basics of eccentricity and trajectories) o Be able to calculate gravitational force, velocity, time period, radius in circular orbit. o Understand different parameters of elliptical orbits.
