MAE 111 Homework 2 and 3 After completing the in-class brain storming assignment on September 27 th …. 1. Pick something (e.g., product) that a mechanical or aerospace engineer worked on that is interesting to you. a. What is the product, project, etc.? Aircraft Seating b. Brainstorm – for the following components of identity, what do you think could have been neglected in the design? Why do you think this? Use the “diversity iceberg” if you need help with vii. i. Race and/or ethnicity - Different races have different bone densities as well as variations in the bone structure which should be accounted for in the high- pressure environment that is a space flight. ii. Gender -Men and Women have different bone structures and as well as body shapes that should be accounted for in the seats of spacecraft iii. Abilities -Space flight has only accessible to able-bodied individuals and a seat that can support them regardless of disability. iv. Age- The youngest person sent to space was an 18-year-old boy however, a seat must be accessible for all ages and thus far only has been for adult bodies. v. Size of user (e.g, height and/or weight variances)- Individuals sent into space are generally lean and in good shape however, with commercial space flight becoming a reality those of all shapes and sizes may attempt to enter space and seating must be accessible for them. vi. Socioeconomic status- Spaceflight has always been extremely expensive and in turn, is only accessible to the wealthy. A seat must be as cost-effective as possible to at least attempt to lower this massive buy-in. vii. Other (note what you looked for in other) – People’s roles and functions also apply when it comes to seating they must be able to access everything they need to do their job. 2. Based on the brainstorm above, what research question are you asking? i How does the design of spacecraft seating restrict accessibility for all kinds of people? 3. Based on the research questions, come up with at least 3 keywords/phrases (don’t forget about connecting words and the use of quotations from HW 1)? Feel free to revise your research question and keyword/phrases based on what you find when you start searching later in this assignment. a. “aircraft seats” b. accessibility c. design
4. Using the research question and keywords you selected, for each of the types of information you’re searching for, what search engine(s) did you use to search? a. News media – google/google scholar b. Professional/trade magazine/journal – engineering village database c. Conference abstract or paper – google scholar d. Peer-reviewed journal article - engineering village database e. Opinion (e.g., blog) – google/google scholar 5. Upload an article/web link from each of the sources below as a PDF, not a web link. Write the title of the article next to the source (name your PDFs so they match the source): a. News media - Simulating Airline Seats to Be More Inclusive with ESI Virtual Seat Solution. https://www.engineering.com/story/simulating-airline-seats-to-be-more- inclusive-with-esi-virtual-seat-solution b. Professional/trade magazine/journal – A model-based approach for the analysis of aircraft seating comfort. c. Conference abstract or paper – HUMAN FACTORS IN DESIGN OF PASSENGER SEATS FOR COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT--A REVIEW d. Peer-reviewed journal article – Design of a two seats light sport aircraft e. Opinion (e.g., blog) – Test Dummies Provide Valuable Data for Starliner’s Seat Design. https://blogs.nasa.gov/commercialcrew/2017/05/25/test-dummies-provide-valuable- data-for-starliners-seat-design/ 6. From the sources above, write 1-3 sentences about why you think this source could provide useful information to answer your questions about this topic. If you don’t think any sources, you have found are useful to answer your research question, then refine your question and/or search terms. a. News media Simulating Airline Seats to Be More Inclusive with ESI Virtual Seat. This source provides a look into the analysis of aircraft seating and its accessibility. It will be useful to answer questions because it acknowledges that there are issues with the current system in place especially when it comes to larger and or disabled individuals. This source can provide us with a baseline for improvement.
