Report
MAE 111 Information Literacy Project The goal of this project is to use your information literacy skills to investigate and analyze a topic focused on professional (but not technical) skills required for engineering including multiple perspectives. Examples of questions that could be investigated could be, but are not limited to: 1) Can engineers be successful in the presence of a conflict of interest (remember the NSPE code of ethics )? 2) Why is it important for engineers to have communication and collaboration skills for a wide range of audiences? 3) How can a team be collaborative and inclusive team? 4) How does leadership style effect a team’s effectiveness in establishing goals, planning tasks, and meeting objectives? 5) How does diversity effect teams in engineering? In this question, consider diversity with inclusion and diversity without inclusion. 7) Why is it important to be able to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed? (This topic is covered in ABET student outcomes and the NSPE code of ethics ) 8) How can engineers make an impact being civilly engaged? In this assignment you must : 1) Identify at least 5 different sources. All sources must be news, trade publications, or scholarly publications. You may use additional references as needed. Anything beyond reference 5 can be a website/blog. However, you may not focus your project on the additional references (the meat of your report should come from non-web based sources). 2) Find a way to communicate what you have found. This could be a written report (no more than 5 pages), an infographic, a podcast, a video, a poster, etc. 3) Requirements for final product a. Title – provide a title that is descriptive of your topic b. Definitions (if needed) – have a page of definitions explaining key words in your paper c. Introduction/background – provide background, identify the problem, and provide the motivation for evaluating this topic (don’t say because it’s a class assignment, you should have an objective justification). Make sure you have a clear purpose statement (e.g., the purpose of this paper/project was to understand how the range of media outlets assess xxxx….). d. Discussion – Compare and contrast the information found in your sources. e. Conclusion – provide a summary answer to your research question/purpose statement. f. Describe what you learned in this process (formally written, but a true reflection on what you learned, from all aspects of this class: searching for information, identifying a topic, and most importantly, how analyzing different sources will affect the way you evaluate information in the future. Note: if you write a report, this can be included in the body of the report. If you choose a different modality, then this can be a separate document.
g. References – cite all references used in IEEE format.
