Our reading this week relates to belief. Read the chapter by Lévi-Strauss (1963). This chapter is considered a foundational text in medical anthropology. In the chapter Lévi-Strauss, famous for pioneering structuralism theory, uses four compelling stories to illustrate the three levels of belief involved in shamanistic cure. Post your answers below to the following questions. Questions adapted from Brown and Barrett (2010). 1. What are the three levels of belief that Levi- Strauss thinks form the core of the “shamanistic complex”? Which of these beliefs do you think is the most important? 2. Why does Quesalid change from a non-believer into a believer? How does he get incorporated into the system? Why doesn’t he tell the truth at the end of his life? 3. Provide an example of how placebo/nocebo are used in biomedicine and discuss the similarities and differences to the examples provided by Lévi-Strauss in the reading.
