EARLY HOMININ SKELETAL FEATURES AND THEIR IMPORTANCE Their pelvic or hip bones had a bowl-like shape and were cut shorter from top to bottom. As a result, the pelvis could hold more weight when standing or walking on two feet. The leg and foot bones of early hominins were more like those of humans than apes. They could be bipedal based on this. These hominid adults possessed brains that were one-third the size of humans. The face was enormous in comparison to the size of the brain. They had large, thick-enamel molar teeth, but smaller front teeth. They possessed cheekbones or zygomatic arches. A sagittal crest is present. Early hominins and the ancestors of current chimpanzees differ from each other. The skull and jaws of modern humans are substantially smaller. All other apes, including chimpanzees, have flat feet and longer arms than legs, which set them apart from early hominins. Early hominins shared traits with contemporary humans, such as bipedalism and blunt canines. Early hominins and chimpanzees differ from one other in a number of ways, including the amount of hair, prognathism, size of the brain, and bipedalism.
