W10 Applying Anthropology: Power 1. Name a person at BYU-Idaho that has power. Why does this person have power, and how do they use it? One person who has power in BYU Idaho is Professor Stephen Smith he is a professor at BYU Idaho and he teach the anthropology class at the university, one of the ways that professor Steven has power is that he has the power to use some certain formal and informal social norms and rules that make him have control of the behavior of his students, also that he has the power to motivate their students to develop themselves and act in to the classroom in a professional and correct way. 2. How does BYUI use informal social control? One way in which BYU-I uses an informal system of Social control this is because standards and norms non written are established, that help to regulate the student behavior, this happens because the school is closely linked to the church, this means that the same expectations that are when going to church every Sunday are had when attending BYU-I like for example, the expectation the professors and other student have on how we need to behave in the school are based on principles and values related with the church teachings. These standards of life and values make students behave in a respectful and polite way with teachers and their classmates, something interesting is that these standards of behavior are not written but they are enforced by the community because everybody that attend BYU-I that is why who goes to the university knows that they should behave in this way because if these unwritten rules are not complied with, they can end up being socially judged, this is how BYU-I use an informal social control system. 3.How does BYUI use formal social control? The most popular way in which BYU-I uses a form of formal social control is through compliance with the Honor Code, this Honor Code is a series of rules and standard of behavior that must be met in order to attend the university and this code talks about moral standards and the process to get the ecleciastic endorsement is through an interview with our church leaders, and if some of the rules established in this code are not met, the student may be subject to some disciplinary action, that is why this is written rules and regulations in the Honor Code is one way that BYU-I employs as a formal social control system. 4.Given an example of rank and stratification at BYUI. An example of rank stratification in BYU-I is that there are online students and students on campus, this means that all the students who attend to classes at the campus, they have a benefit over the online students because they can have a profesor everyday that can help them to solve questions that they may have this makes them to create a closer interaction between teacher and student that allows the student to learn in an better way. On the other hand, online students have the benefit of being able to study at their home and at the hours that they may need, I think this makes a difference in the way students study in BYU-I.
