SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE UNIVERSITY BRIDGET EBELING ATH-101 INTRODUCTION TO ANTHROPOLOGY 7-2 FINAL PROJECT PART B SUBMISSION JAMIE RANKIN OCTOBER 15, 2023
I.CULTURAL DIVERSITY A.1. Cultural diversity does help us to learn about other cultures and gives us an understanding of many different perspectives in the world. This does matter because in a crisis we may be required to do specific things in a certain situation when it does occur. This would allow us to assist better people in situations. Some people assume that all nurses or librarians are all women, and that engineers and doctors are all men. This may have to do with women being seen as nurturing and caregivers which are female traits that are seen in the public's eyes. The leaders of the bossy take-charge types are seen as men for doctors and engineers. A.2. Relating human behavior and how it does relate to sociocultural we tend to see people as one way. We have an Amish community in my area, and we do tend to see them as farmers. A.3. When we want to see how sociocultural identity relates to animals, we look at lions. They protect their family with the strength of pride. Men are often compared to lions because they are seen as leaders and protectors of their families. B.1. Having an anthropological perspective during a crisis can be very helpful. With some immediate demands that are placed during a crisis does show factors of cultural identity and factors of culture are being neglected often. Anthropologists are potentially important players in emergency public health response, providing insight into the social dynamics of health, illness, and disease transmission (Stellmach, Bedford, du Cros & Stringer, 2018). The values and beliefs of the people of the world are very sensitive to the people they are trying to help. An Anthropologist does understand any differences in culture that there may be that can provide the best help. II. ANTHROPOLOGICAL METHODS
A.1. For this crisis, I am choosing ethnography. Living within a society and researching its people for years through their culture with the process of sustained observation and participation. This would give me an in-depth study of how life is affected by all the plastic wars. This would be the best method for this type of crisis. I would be able to see how people lived before and after the crisis. B.1. When I was dealing with the reaction of the community, I did receive many different reactions. Many people were very upset that the government did not want to help clean up the ocean and land that had gotten unrecycled plastics. Many people were complaining that this was causing health problems within the community. Once I explained to the community that I was there to help they seemed to open up and give me their expressed concerns. We were able to come up with eco-friendly ideas that could help clean up the land and ocean from all the unrecycled plastics. B.2. Using an objective lens can help me to gain a social-cultural perspective. This would help us without the worry of having any personal biases that would be used to get in the way. Using this lens would help assist when you are calming down a group of people. Once the group of people sees that we are not being biased and we are there to find a solution for the ongoing crisis they will accept the help more. III. CULTURAL CONNECTIONS A.1. This crisis can yes happen here now. Recycling plastic is practically impossible, and the problem is getting worse (Sullivan, 2022). Many people do not know how to recycle properly and this causes our beaches and streets to have this plastic in them.
