Discussion #2 Through reading the work of Pyke and Johnson, a clear understanding of racialized femininity is displayed. After reading the analyzed interviews of young Asian American women there is a distinct manner in which Asian femininity can be described. known as stereotypical, Asian femininity is represented as submissive and quiet and attributes to the gender hierarchy. The majority of each account follows the same pattern, the young Asian American women will act shyer and subordinate around their shared ethnicity. Yet, when around mainstream interactions they feel they can or need to be more outspoken. Note that there is a difference between certain young Asian American Women who feel like have to act a certain way compared to those who feel more impowered around white-dominated or mainstream cultural settings. Each piece of data collected within this study highlights the inherent need to reconstruct gender especially focusing on the participants of this study. In which the ways these participants described their femininity in different arenas suggests that Asian American women will find gender equality in trade for rejecting their own ethnicity and embracing the white standards of gender. This creates a hierarchy the privileges white women of Asian American women which serves hegemonic masculinity by making the Asian American woman more available to white men. After reading the work of West and Zimmerman in "Doing Gender" it is important to differentiate between sex, sex category, and gender because it is clear that each of these categories can vary independently. For example, it is completely viable to claim a sex category when the sex criteria are lacking. I understand that each of these categories typically make presumptions or stand as proxies for each other within these three different categories. Although, each category can vary independently and there is a difference in definitions between biology and culture within each category.
