HUMANISTIC THEORIES - emphasizes unique qualities of humans, esp free will and potential to grow - based on that humans have a drive towards personal growth - humans have free will over their actions, are not pawns of their environment - humans are conscious and rational, who are not controlled by unconscious needs ROGERS PERSON CENTRED THEORY - personality contains only one construct: the self or self concept - collection of beliefs about ones nature, unique qualities, behavior etc - if ideas about ourselves match w our actual experiences, then our self concept is congruent w reality - people who have incongruent personalities experience frequent anxiety - more congruent personality = more healthy psychological health MASLOWS THEORY OF SELF ACTUALIZATION - motives are organized in hierarchy of needs - basic needs must be met before others - humans have a drive towards personal growth which is self actualization - fulfillment of ones potential
