Name: _grace_________________ 1. What is the difference between sacrificing an animal and eating 98% of it, and how Americans process chickens for consumption? How are chickens killed for American consumption? - Hmong treat animal souls as connected with humans, once eaten they are bonded forever. With respect and humility, the whole animal is consumed. In America, we like to enhance and only eat certain parts of the chicken that we like, i.e. breast and thighs. Intestine and other parts of the animal are not typically consumed or treated with the same dignity shown by Hmong. Americans also view the act of slaughtering and eating chickens as less ceremonial and “special”, so there is less care put into the whole process 2. Do Hmong sacrifice dogs? What about Pigs and chickens? How much was Lia’s cow? - The Hmong do not sacrifice dogs but do sacrifice pigs and chickens. Lia’s cow was $300. 3. Where does the family put the cow’s severed head? Why? - The family put the cow’s head on the front doorstep in order to welcome Lia’s soul 4. How much did Lia’s family live on a year? - They lived on $9,480 a year and food stamps 5. Why do the Lees think Lia has lost some of her cognitive abilities? - After being returned to the Lees, Lia is unable to do some of the things she could previously do. Lia was able to sing, count, and interact with people with greetings or gestures, after foster care Lia is not as attentive. 6. Bill Selvidge is asked why Merced’s Dr’s never seemed to ask their Hmong patients how they treated their illnesses. What was his response? - He essentially says because the Hmong seem so assimilated, in American clothes with driver’s licenses and shopping in supermarkets, it didn’t occur to the doctors that they would be practicing alternative cultural medicines, so they didn’t ask. 7. Who is the only one to ask what the Lees are doing to heal Lia? - Jeanine Hilt was the only one who asked and learned about the Lees’ efforts. 8. Who does Jeanine use as an interpreter? What does Neil think of Jeanine?
- Jeanine uses May, the Lees’ most Americanized daughter. Neil describes her as a “pain in the ass” because Jeanine was so adamant about helping the Lees, but she was an amazing patient advocator. 9. Why was assimilation easy to resist for the Hmong? What % of their food do the Hmong produce in Laos? - Assimilation was easy to resist for the Hmong because they didn’t have much interaction with the dominant culture, they didn’t visit the plains and avoided their territories. They were self-sufficient for their needs of food and livestock, producing it all themselves. 10. What are the reasons the Hmong collaborated with the US and the CIA? - They feared their autonomy (like the practice of swidden farming) if communism took hold and from the North Vietnamese, so majority supported the royalists. There was also the idea of military fame and land occupation of their mountains. 11. How much were army privates paid in Vietnam? What about Hmong? The army privates were paid $197.50-$339 a month while the Hmong were paid 2,000 kip or $3. 12. What rate did Hmong soldiers die compared to American soldiers in Vietnam? - The Hmong soldiers died at a rate 10x more than the American soldiers. 13. How did the EMT's and the doctors respond to what Neil referred to as Lia's "big one"? Do you think they performed as well as they could have under the circumstances? - The EMTs and doctors were all frantic in trying to save her life, Neil describes a scene similar to The Exorcist and everyone trying to do their best given the circumstance. I think given the urgency of the situation, that Lia was on the brink of death, the medical staff was under a lot of pressure and frantic. So, they might not have been able to delver the best care but it’s understandable. 14. What did medical staff at MCMC fail to do, and fail to think of as a cause of her “big one?” - The staff failed to realize that this episode may have had an underlying cause such as an infection as her temperate was high and she has diarrhea. They were so worried in expecting the “big one” they didn’t look for signs that her seizures may have been caused by something else. 15. Why does Lia need to be transferred to Valley Children’s Hospital in Fresno? - The Merced does not have a children’s intensive care unit and all critical pediatric cases have to be transferred to the Valley Children’s Hospital in Fresno.
