Food and food preferences are closely tied to cultural identity and social status. While food preferences may be culturally constructed, they are certainly not static. In a post of at least 250 words, discuss the role of the “other” in the making of Belizean national cuisine. Be sure to answer the following: a. What does consumption of foreign products symbolize for Belizeans? b. Is there a hierarchical taste order in Western culture? c. Can you think of an example of “stratified taste sandwich” in your culture? d. How has taste been used in political projects in Belize, from colonial times through independence? 4. Consumption of foreign products symbolizes a growing sense of prosperity for Belizeans. The “tale of two meals” shows the consumption of foreign products symbolizes comfort and wealth for Belizeans. In “the tale of two meals” was when the Belizeans provided a meal that wasn’t authentic. The greater disposable income of Belizeans which gives them the ability to consume foreign products. Also there is a pre- ordained consumption hierarchy in Belizean society’s where the consumption of foreign products is either limited more or less depending on the class of the society. The hierarchical taste order in western cultures could be explained by the disposable income made by the population constituting these hierarchies. I would say lobster could be an example of a “stratified taste sandwich” because lobster was eaten by both poor people and rich people. Lobster is liked and eaten by both classes. In Belize food has been used in personal and political contexts to create a sense of the nation also at the same time increase political economic dependency after they gained independence. Colonial Belize had a clear hierarchy of food practices but the class taste are bound together in the system. After independence Belizeans valued their tradition foods and would become self sufficient in food.
