History - One of 7 buildings more than a century old - Replaced the first campus building on Old Main when it burned down in 1912 Prexy’s Moon - Small light on top of the dome - Until 1931 - Lit up campus at night - “Prexy” is slang for president - After WWI cadets still had live rounds and they used it as target practice - Taken down because of this - It is in the Mayo-Thomas Room of the Cushing Memorial Library and Archives Liberty Bell Replica - In the building’s rotunda - 55 full sized bells were cast and shipped to the states (1950) - Texas Gov Allan Shivers decided to put it at A&M because of Aggie contributions to WWII - “No one suffered more than the Aggies, so we will give it to them.” - Over 20,000 Aggies fought in WWII about 14,000 of them serving as officers; 953 died in service - It is rang occasionally in remembrance of their sacrifice University Seal - Donated by class of 1978 - Hand laid glass by Joe Hutchinson, the creator of it - Can see the missing tiles from foot traffic - Protected by barrier Construction - Led by Fredrick Giesecke (class of 1886) - Founded the first formal architecture program at A&M - He also helped design many other buildings like Sbisa dining hall, Cushing Library, the Jack K. Williams Administration Building, Hart and Walton Halls, and others - Completed in 1914 - Giesecke did not know much about reinforced concrete so he figured out the amount of steel and just doubled it - So much steel, blow torches were used to add piping for water fountains later Design - Classic architectural details like a rotunda and Ionic Columns
- Designed by Fredrick Giesecke - One of the first buildings on campus to use rebar Purpose - Silver Taps is held outside the building and taps is played from the dome (started in 1898) - Today, the building houses administrative offices and Faculty Senate. Hispanic studies, European & classical languages & cultures and performance studies in the College of Liberal Arts also have offices and classrooms in the building.
