2 Anthropological Concept: The anthropological concept that I will be talking about in modernization. “Modernization involves the transition from a premodern society to a modern society” (SNHU, n.d.). In the scene where Scarlett is in Atlanta during the period of when they are reconstructing, she is seen starting her own lumber business (Fleming,1939). This scene shows Scarlett transitioning from the society that she has known and is embracing the societal changes. When looking at Scarlett’s behavior in this film it is important to understand the historical context of the South. Her actions may seem debatable from present- time standards but they align with Civil War era society expectations. By looking at the way she behaves with cultural relativism we can understand Scarlett was within the norms of her time. When we look at Scarlett’s actions with cultural relativism, we can see her response to the trails she had to face during the civil war and reconstruction era. Being able to maintain to be objective is very important to be able to appreciate her complexity within the structure of the film’s representation of the South’s society during modernization. In comparing cultures, it is important to embrace an objective perspective, recognizing that every culture has its pros and cons. By avoiding the concept that one culture in superior over another, we can promote an overall understanding that values the complexity and abundance ingrained in various cultural expressions.
