OPTION 2 – VIRTUAL HOMININ LAB In this option, you will analyze and report on fossil evidence from key hominins, discussing significant anatomical and behavioral traits. If you enjoy the hands-on work of anthropology, then this might be a good option for you. Task ● Choose whether you want to focus on Homo erectus, Homo heidelbergensis, Homo neanderthalensis , or Homo sapiens . ● Watch the lab video and examine the virtual 3D cranium (skull) for your chosen species ● Answer the following prompts ○ Describe key anatomical and behavioral traits that you learned about your chosen species from the lab video, 3D virtual fossil, and course materials. How did the lab materials enhance your knowledge? - Information on significant physical and behavioral characteristics of hominin species is provided by the lab film, 3D virtual fossil, and course materials. Skull, teeth, and limb bones are examples of anatomical traits that can provide insight on a person's cognition, diet, and mode of mobility. It is possible to look at behavioral characteristics like tool use and social interaction. The course materials offer a more comprehensive understanding of hominid evolution, while the lab materials include visualizations and interactive experiences for a closer analysis of fossils and their context. ○ What is your major takeaway about this species for the significance of human evolution? - The significance of a species for human evolution depends on their adaptations, evolutionary relationships, and contribution to filling gaps in the hominin fossil record.
