Instructions: You are welcome to use your textbook and/or notes to complete this lab. The images associated with questions 1-4 are found on the PDF document in A2L. A feature is a part of a bone (i.e. femoral head). Element refers to the entire bone. Use ONLY the SPACE provided/indicated. Information outside of the lines provided will not be graded. PART A: BONE IDENTIFICATION 1) Identify the cranial elements in image #1, provide a side for paired elements. (6 marks) A) Frontal B) Parietal C) Maxilla D) Sphenoid 2) Identify the bone and the labelled features. (5 marks) Bone: Humerus Bonus side: A) Trochlea B) Humeral Head C) Olecranon fossa D) Medial epicondyle 3) Identify the features of the os coxa. (5 marks) A) Auricular surface B) Pubic symphysis C) Greater sciatic foramen D) Obturator foramen E) Iliac crest 4) One of these bones is an ulna and one is a radius (both make up the forearm). Determine which bone is which and identify unique features that helped you make this determination. (6 marks, 7 lines max. for answer) a) Radius b) Ulna; Proximal End (Elbow), the ulna has a larger and more prominent olecranon process. The radius has a smaller, rounded head that articulates with the capitulum of the humerus (the upper arm bone) at the elbow joint. The ulna is typically more triangular or prism-shaped, with a sharper posterior border and a thicker appearance along its length. The radius is more cylindrical and tends to be thinner
McMaster University ANTHROP 3FA3 Department of Anthropology Fall 2023 along its length, with a rounder cross-section. The trochlear notch is a distinctive U- shaped notch located at the proximal end of the ulna. PART B: ETHICS AND PROFESSIONALIZATION Below are two scenarios. Think about the ethical and professional components of each scenario. Identify whether there are issues with ethical practices, professional demeanour, or both. Justify your answers in the space indicated. (4 marks each) 5) A forensic scientist and their colleague loudly chat about the details and results of an on-going case during their morning commute on the bus. One mentions not taking detailed notes of their work and jokes, “Protocol? I don’t know her.” (8 lines max.) 1) Ethical “Confidentiality”, this behavior violates the principle of confidentiality, which is crucial in forensic science to protect sensitive information and maintain the integrity of the investigation. It could potentially compromise the case and breach ethical standards. 2) Lack of professionalism by disregarding protocols, not taking detailed notes, and joking about disregarding protocol demonstrates a lack of professional ethics. Proper documentation and adherence to protocols are fundamental principles in forensic science. 6) When asked to explain a specific methodology while on the stand in court, a forensic anthropologist scoffs and says, “That is too complex to describe simply – all you need to know is that the victim grew up in Northern British Columbia.” (8 lines max.) Ethical issue: Lack of transparency, in court, it is essential to provide clear and accurate explanations of methodologies and evidence in an understandable way for lay people to ensure fairness and the pursuit of truth. This inadequate explanation doing harm to investigation by mispresenting the evidence. Professional Demeanor Issue: Failure to Communicate Effectively, They should be able to convey complex scientific information in a manner understandable to non-experts like judges and jurors. Additionally, their disrespectful and dismissive attitude towards the court's request for an explanation is unprofessional and damages their credibility. Grade: /30
