Popular Culture Access Access to music videos and episodic imaging has changed over the years. Many people used to just have to watch television and now they can stream at the push of a button. In the early 2000’s music videos and television had to follow the guidelines in order to be shown on that channel. Today streaming services do not have to follow the same guidelines that were set forth. Federal law prohibits obscene, indecent and profane content from being broadcast on the radio or TV.” (FCC 2021) For broadcast television and radio what can be broadcast is restricted, the radio stations or television stations must make sure they follow the guidelines set forth by the Federal Communications Commission or risk being fined or shut down. For streaming services, such as Netflix or Apple Music, they do not have to follow the same guidelines as they are not as closely monitored. People are watching at their own risk verses watching what is being broadcast. “As of September 2020, six corporations control 90 percent of media outlets in the U.S.: AT&T, CBS, Comcast, Disney, News Corp and Viacom.” (Ismi, 2021) These companies that control the media are also deciding what is being broadcast on television or what shows are being shown. They are deciding what news is being told. They affect what shows are popular, like Grey’s Anatomy. “...Grey’s Anatomy is one of the very few still airing on prime-time TV...” (Ulaby, 2021). Many people of the older generation consume their episodic imaging on broadcast television, while the younger generations are streaming and watching online.
