1 Module 2: Critical Thinking How can I use these to better my health? Grace Hilderman Dr. McFee CSU Global HUM 101 January 29, 2023
2 Module 2: Critical Thinking Introduction It is important to understand that critical thinking the process of evaluating something objectively in order to make a decision. When coming to a decision an important aspect to consider is when receiving or giving information is how will the information be perceived. The factors that can come into play are misinterpretation of the information, personal biases, assumptions, and inferences about the information. Knowledge about an issue or topic is vital excelling in a situation it can help one understand the situation depending upon the situation. Critical thinking will help us understand and analyze a situation when it presents itself. Once every aspect of critical thinking comes together, the benefit to how situations are handled or perceived in the future will be evident. Critical thinking will not only improve one’s knowledge but also, understanding those around us will also benefit. The Difference from Assumptions, Inference, and Insert Information It is crucial to understand assumptions are when we believe something to be true without having any genuine information or facts to support it, we are making an assumption. In other circumstances, making assumptions can be exceedingly detrimental, such as when a doctor administers the appropriate drug without realizing that their patient will have a horrible reaction. The results can be potentially deadly in certain situations but positive in others like, seeing an elderly neighbor appearing to struggle carrying their groceries so you offer to help so they do not drop anything. An inference is a logical conclusion drawn from an examination of things, feelings, experiences, facts, and ideas that, in the context of what is known, appears likely. An
3 Module 2: Critical Thinking example of an inference is a person might assume that the filament has burned out if they flip on a light but nothing happens. Finally, insert information by ingesting inactive information, we imply retaining knowledge that, despite having been learned and thought to have understood, we actually do not. For example, lot of people have learned a lot about democracy in school, leading them to assume they are familiar with the idea. Example of The Importance of Assumption and Consequences The problem of assumptions is depending upon the situation taking place it can be perceived as negative or positive. It is important to remember you can check if you can appropriately infer conclusions from the findings of your study by conducting assumption testing on it. Assumptions can be thought of as the conditions you must meet in order to carry out your analysis. An example of the importance of assumption in my life is at my job communication is vital to the success of operations. One week I was asking for time off and I did not think to ask for my current days off as well so I asked for the days off that I worked thinking that would equal a week off. However, because I figured it would all work out my manager who made the schedule for the week scheduled me for the two days that were my weekend. As an outcome I needed to back and explain to them my thought process and admit my mistake because I assumed they knew what I wanted as I had the same days off for many years. As a consequence, my managers had to create a new schedule because my communication was not effective. This represents the importance of assumptions and how if they are not handled correct the consequences can potentially be catastrophic. Leading to potential confusion from all parties involved when if critical analysis was involved it could have been avoided.
