2 Identify Someone That Differs from You The planet is a vastly different and diversified environment. Diversity brings us together while simultaneously showcasing our differences and similarities. Some people accept different cultures eagerly, while others may not. The recognition and sharing of our distinctive distinctions is the common thread that connects our individual experiences. Fostering open-mindedness is critical in today's world. Racism remains, and the possibilities of encountering people with different belief systems, origins, upbringing in various nations or areas, or speaking different languages is limitless. Accepting diversity is critical for a more inclusive society. Our identities are greatly influenced by our cultural upbringing, and each person's identification is distinct. We have all heard the saying, if everyone dressed and looked the same, there wouldn't be any excitement in the world. The person with whom I interviewed is my husband, Ramon, who is Puerto Rican and comes from a strong Pentecostal background. Now a husband, a father of five (three daughters and two sons), Ramon is adamant about his Christian beliefs, family and cultural values and attending college as an adult. Ramon's story has the potential to deeply impact a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT). It can enhance cultural sensitivity and understanding, inspire a focus on resilience and positive transformation within family systems, highlight the concept of intersectionality, provide insights into the impact of substance abuse on families, introduce the integration of pastoral counseling into therapy, offer perspectives on grief within family dynamics, and emphasize the transformative power of education and empowerment. Overall, Ramon's narrative contributes valuable insights that can enrich and inform the therapeutic approach of an MFT, fostering a more comprehensive and empathetic understanding of diverse family experiences (Holyoak et al. 2020) Background

3 Meet Ramon, a resilient man with a life story shaped by the vibrant but challenging streets of Spanish Harlem, NYC. Born and raised to a single mother of five, he faced adversity from an early age. Fluent in Spanish, he grew up immersed in the rich cultural while adhering to the tenets of Pentecostal Christianity. Ramon's journey was marked by heartbreak and loss. His father succumbed to AIDS, leaving a void that was later compounded when his grandfather, a paternal figure, fell victim to a tragic incident involving his girlfriend during Ramon’s teenage years. Despite the strict Christian views prevalent in his upbringing, Ramon’s mother was surprisingly lenient when it came to discipline. The allure of the streets drew him in, leading him to join a gang and engage in destructive habits such as alcoholism and marijuana use. However, life took a transformative turn after marriage and fatherhood. Fueled by a renewed commitment to his Christian faith, Ramon began the challenging but rewarding process of personal redemption. Overcoming a troubled past, he achieved significant milestones, obtaining his GED and earning an associate degree at the age of 43. Ramon's remarkable turnaround saw him break free from the shackles of addiction, remaining alcohol and drug-free for over sixteen years. Embracing his calling, he became a pastor, dedicating the last two years to shepherding a community of believers through his own ministry, aptly named "Fire For The Lord." Ramon’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and the capacity for profound personal transformation. Elements of Ramon’s identity 1.
