Symphony Orchestra
On April 23rd, 2019, the University of South Carolina, School of music held an amazing concert at the beautiful Koger Center. This ensemble collectively performed a wide variety of brilliant pieces. Rachel Calloway was the Mezzo-soprano singer. She was accompanied by an array of amazing musicians. The songs she sang were stylistically different pieces that allowed the audience to experience a wide range even with the same instruments. All of the musicians used music to draw an emotional response from the audience. Like all music these songs told a story and here are the stories.
Sheherazade
, written by the famous Rimsky-Korsakov is a beautiful melody in the beginning of this Arabic-inspired song starts out sounding consonance set the romantic mood at the beginning of this song. The interments and her voice then alternated the melody of the song as though they were relaxing. As the passion heated up, the texture changed within the song began to change. The pitches got a lot higher almost as if Calloway was screaming at the audience to get her point across. The rhythm, which was continuously steady seemed to get faster but still somewhat soft and elegant by the climax of the song. It was also at this point that the dynamics of the song were increasingly getting louder until all instruments met at the top with a bang and then changed the dynamics again to a moderate level until the song concluded.
The Sea of Sinbad’s ship magnificent piece played. This as well as all others she performed was written by Rimsky-Korsakov. During this song the soprano really stood out. She was a great one to watch. I was able to hear and see, through facial expressions, a lot more passion between her and the orchestra in this song. The texture of this piece remained the same through its entirety and the 1,2,3 pattern was also very noticeably throughout the piece as well. This piece began by having very dissonant tones within the harmony. This was a great example

of word painting. The notes drastically went up and down almost like a gust of wind the song then changed into a more consonant harmony, which remained throughout the rest of the song. As the songs continued the
t
exture of this song was polyphonic between her voice and the other orchestra players. The melody of this song was bright and happy. In some places within the song
and the feel was almost cooler and relaxing as the tempo changed and the notes were held for emphasis. There were many dynamics used within this song. The song began with a crescendo from very soft to very loud and then remained in this pattern until the end when the pattern was reversed. Also, during this song Rachel Calloway communicated with the audience and her passionate singing did not stop. She had every note and word memorized to a T. I truly enjoyed watching her use her body to keep up with the tempo. She tapped her hand on her leg and the pianist would nod their heads almost as if they were communicating.
Rimsky-Korsakov’s songs were all so very pretty, but it was of a different sound and texture than that of the other pieces within the concert. These beautiful works were written in English. This was nice because I was able to not only see and hear the passion but, also listen to it clearly.
The Festival in Bagdad Was one of my absolute favorites. I am not sure what I enjoyed more, the fact that Calloway sang with such passion and made the song her own emotional expressions or that this piece reminded me of my childhood. It brought back fond memories of my Aunt, who
was a phenomenal singer. She sang a wide array of older gospel music, so it was nice to revisit old time. The song was fun and although the song had a lot of repetition, I loved listening to the changes over and over again.
The Symphony Orchestra was an enjoyable evening. I must say I enjoyed listening to her more than the last performer I saw. Her concert was filled with elegantly picked songs that were an intellectually stimulating experience. I would not have listened to if not for this assignment.
