The classroom is going to be filled with a diverse group of students and cultures. It is our job
as teachers to ensure that our students feel welcomed and safe within our room. While teachers are faced with teaching a variety of students, it should be a priority that teachers have an understanding of teaching to the various groups of students. Banks (2016) states “Professional development programs should help teachers understand the complex characteristics of ethnic groups and how variables such as social class, religion, region, generation, extent of urbanization, and gender strongly influence ethnic and cultural behavior” (p.298). While watching the video titled, “Seven Principals for Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning” by G. Howard (2013), I enjoyed how he spoke about how the school should look. The school should look “like the students”. This means there should be representation of cultures, backgrounds, and abilities. To incorporate all seven principals in my classroom, I will need to establish a safe and welcoming learning community. 1.
Students will be welcomed and encouraged to speak about and teach the class about their cultures (if they feel comfortable doing so). I plan on teaching my class about the numerous different cultures around the world; including those cultures of my students. Allowing the students to speak and share about their culture during the lessons as well. 2.
As a teacher, I want to ensure that my students know they are welcomed and loved in my classroom. In order to do this, I will take the time to learn more about my students and allow them to share their lives with me. 3.
My classroom will be decorated with the idea that all cultures are welcomed in my classroom. Lessons and projects that pertain to different cultures will also be decorating my classroom and openly discussed. 4.
My students will be encouraged to do their best on their work and ask for help when needed. Positive reinforcement and praises will be the foundation to my students success.
5.
Not all students learn the same way. I will accommodate all students learning goals when lesson planning. I will also set aside extra time in my lesson planning to work one on one with the students who ma require extra help. 6.
Creating a classroom rules and expectations at the beginning of the year and remaining consistent with it will set a foundation to what I expect rom my students.
7.
Allow my students to work in both small groups and by themselves inorder to be able
to bounce ideas off one another but also promote the idea of individuality and creativity. Banks, J. A. (2016).
