Report
Alisa Starks-East Cultural Identity and Cultural Identity Development I was born to two people who valued education. My father was in the Airforce and meet my mother, while attending the University. Higher education was never not an option. My parents made sure, even in nursery school, I obtained the best education. Education was to be one of the doors, I walk through to a better life. My parents came up struggling and wanted to make sure, I did not have those same struggles. Because of the military life, I later grew to realize, with the moves, I grew up with and encountered people from many different cultures, races, and walks of life. I was born into culture competence blindly. From childhood birthday parties, school age playgrounds, dinner table conversations, and sleepovers; I was being culturally conditioned. My personal beliefs, values, and attitudes about culturally diverse populations were being formed. From my youth, I was already learning the three cultural competences: awareness, knowledge, and skills. (Sue, 2019, p.39). During these varied interactions, I would learn to speak proper English, how to carry myself in social settings, and no matter how light skinned, and educated, in some circles, I would still never be accepted. It was later during high school, when I excepted the call of salvation and was adopted into the Christian family, I appreciated my uniqueness. I stopped trying to fit into a group, and learned to be “ME.” On the individual level, (Sue, 2019, p.34), no individual is like another. It was okay to celebrate my differences, and search to find my purpose, for being called. From the age of ten, I taught in the church, as a Sunday school teacher. My stellar education afforded me the capabilities, and the Holy Spirit used my vessel, for His glory. All that time, I was being prepared for the five-fold ministry. I often to tried to fit into a racial box, then check other. I am
now comfortable with my cultural development, yet still under construction, because it’s a lifelong process. In my development, I am striving to no longer know persons after the flesh, but by their spirit. In Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for we are all one in Christ Jesus. (2 Corinthians 5:16, Galatians 3: 28).
