Arts 1110 Midterm Exam Review ARTS 1110: Midterm Exam Review Section 3 Sample Questions Section 3 (20%) Critical Thinking Write an essay in which you identify the stance the author is taking on the topic, and the reasons for the stance (the claims). This is the thesis statement for the passage. Identify the flaws in the passage (assumptions, failure to provide adequate evidence, and other reasoning flaws). Based upon the things you have learned in this term about academic writing, research, and critical thinking, identify the ways in which the argument could be improved. It’s time to face facts. Red light cameras are nothing more than a money grab by the city. In May 2002, the Provincial Government passed legislation allowing cities to use photo enforcement technology as long as it was used solely to reduce collisions and injuries. What a joke. There is no evidence that photo radar reduces collisions or injuries. Parking photo radar vehicles on main thoroughfares like Portage Avenue and giving automatic tickets to vehicle owners travelling slightly over the speed limit does nothing to reduce collisions or injuries. Photo radar generated over 3 million dollars for the city last year. It’s time our city officials came clean and just acknowledged that photo radar is nothing more than a way to get more money out of law-abiding taxpayers. They have to quit pretending that they care about reducing collisions or injuries because clearly they don’t. What is the stance? What are the reasons for the stance (the claims)? Is there evidence provided? What is it? What is the problem with the evidence? What evidence would convince you of the validity of the claim?
