3-2 Project Draft 2 Introduction The key characteristic of history is that it examines the past. It can be as an applied critical approach or for public policy development, it traces present conditions in human society and outlines future alternatives. History began with its focuses primarily on war and military conquest but later expanded to include deeper examinations of civilizations and societal issues, as well as sociology, demography, geography, political science, economics, and anthropology (Kronzek, 2022). The key characteristics of social science are that it is the study of human behavior, as well as social interactions, and the relationships between individuals, groups, and institutions (Garcia, 2023). Consist of the fields: sociology, anthropology, psychology, archaeology, history, economics, business administration, political science, geography, women’s studies, and ethnic studies. One distinct characteristic for social science is the method in which research is obtained, quantitative or qualitative. Quantitative being statistically based and typically involving multiple choice surveys; qualitative either involving in depth interviews or the researcher living among the study group for an extensive period. The key characteristics of natural science are any of the sciences that deal with matter, energy, and their interrelations and transformations or with objectively measurable phenomena. These studies include physics, chemistry, or biology. (Merriam- Webster, 2023) Another key characteristic is the use of the scientific method, which involves forming a hypothesis, testing the hypothesis with experiments, then refining their hypothesis as needed. A key characteristic of this process is that it should be able to be replicated, to receive the same results.
3-2 Project Draft 3 The key characteristics of humanities is the study of the human experience and culture. This includes the study of languages, literatures, preforming arts, visual arts, history, and philosophy. Some definitions also include law, religion, and the culinary arts as part of the humanities. The types of evidence used when looking through each lens are artifacts, audio/ visual recordings, photographs, works of art, and birth certificates for primary sources. For secondary sources we can look in biographies or commentaries. For tertiary sources, which should be mainly used as a source of background information, look at encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, databases, manuals, bibliographies, or chronologies. History and social science intertwine with many of the areas of studies in which they include. These areas include but are not limited to sociology, geography, political science, economics, and anthropology. The area of the humanities, the culinary arts, also intertwines with the natural sciences due to the involvement of the molecular changes that can occur in baking/ cooking. A difference that stands out to me is the difference in the way research is collected between the social sciences and the natural sciences. Where social science is collected through surveys and interviews, the natural science collected data using the scientific method. Natural Sciences differ from all the other lens as it focuses of the natural world, and the other lenses focus on human interactions.
