Module 5 Short Responses – Question 1 In the space below, specify which historical lens you'd like to use for this exercise. I would specifically focus on the social lens for the Civil Rights Movement. The social lens gives insight on how people were divided due to race for more than a century. Module 5 Short Responses – Question 2 Next, formulate a research question about the civil rights movement (historical time from 1954 – 1968), using the lens you've chosen. During the civil rights movement, did the Jim Crow laws create further tensions between recently freed slaves and the communities around them? Module 5 Short Responses – Question 3 First, go back and review the research question you developed in Step 1. For Step 2, first name two different primary sources that you might use to answer that question. Be as specific as you can. Your primary sources should be found using the Shapiro Library. The first primary source, that would be helpful in answering the research question posed, is titled "Descriptions of the Ku Klux Klan". This source was located in the Shapiro library and lends insight on how the KKK opposed free African Americans and continuously harassed and harmed innocent African Americans. This action spiked as the civil rights movement was seeing success. The second primary source is titled " The struggle continues: civil rights, civil rights, civil rights". This is a news article from 1989 that shines a light on the atrocities faced by African Americans during the civil rights movements, the reconstruction era, and so much more. This source can be located using the Shapiro library. Module 5 Short Responses – Question 4 Next, name two different secondary sources you could use to answer your research question. Again, be as specific as you can. Your secondary sources should be found using the Shapiro Library. First, a secondary source titled " The origins and legacy of the civil rights and the early civil
rights movement" which details the precursors and lasting impacts of the civil rights movement along with the protests, activists, and violence that occurred. This can be located using the Shapiro library. Another secondary source is "opportunities found and lost: labor, radicals, and the early civil rights movement". Which speaks to the missing voices during this time, due to lack of education. This provides information on the stories about going from slavery to a freedman looking for work. This can be found on jstor.org. Module 5 Short Responses – Question 5 Construct a thesis statement that provides an answer to the research question you posed in Step 1. Base your response on the historical evidence that's been presented in this course so far, as well as any research you may have done on your own. The thesis statement that I would pose to answer the research question is as follows: During the civil rights movement, the tension was building as African Americans gained freedoms and more rights. This was exasperated during the Jim Crow era which created further tensions between whites and blacks during this timeframe. Module 5 Short Responses – Question 6 Name three specific historical events that can be considered contributory causes of the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Briefly explain why you believe each of these events contributed to the passage of the Act. The three events that can be considered contributory causes for the passage of the Voting Rights Act are: The Montgomery Bus Boycott, Brown v Board of Education, and the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. The Montgomery Bus Boycott led to the arrest of Rosa Parks which in turn resulted in mass protests creating political and social pressure. Brown v Board of Education further pushed social and political tensions by desegregating. The assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr sparked outrage, racial violence, extensive damage from riots. This created further pressure for change. Module 5 Short Responses – Question 7 Based on what you read about the passage of the Voting Rights Act on Page 1 of this learning block, name one event that was part of the course of this bill's passage by Congress.
The text stated that the "brutal mistreatment of peaceful voting-rights protesters in Alabama, including the now-famous confrontation in Selma that became known as "Bloody Sunday," galvanized public opinion and forced Johnson to act". I agree that this created enough public turmoil for the president to have to act and attempt to calm the public uproar. Module 5 Short Responses – Question 8 Name three specific consequences caused by the passage of the Voting Rights Act. 1. Significant increase of representation of African Americans in congress, state, and local offices. 2. Increase in African American voters. 3. Consistent legal challenges that caused the act to be adjusted over time to ensure its effectiveness. Module 5 Short Responses – Question 9 One of these scholars relied heavily on evidence about the substance of today's political debate. Which scholar was that? What sort of evidence did he use? Kennedy relied heavily on the substance of today's political debate, specifically contrasting the nineteenth century against today with statements such as "What we have today might be characterized as "asymmetric polarization". Module 5 Short Responses – Question 10 One of these scholars relied heavily on evidence about the political process . Which scholar was that? What sort of evidence did he use? Pildes relied heavily on the political process when he stated that "no longer could conservative, one-party political monopoly be maintained." Module 5 Short Responses – Question 11 1. What is the topic of this essay? Does the author make it clear in the introduction? 2. What is the author's thesis?

3. What kind of sources and evidence do you think the author will use to support his thesis? The topic of the essay is desegregation and the demonstrations that the author is recounting this is a clear introductory paragraph. The author’s thesis is "By examining the effort to desegregate public facilities through the lens of the first sit-in in Charleston, this article will illustrate how a small, committed group of local high school students and teachers played an integral, though overlooked, role in the civil rights movement." I believe that this author will use primary and secondary sources that are scholarly in nature to support the thesis statement.
