Psych 321: Data Analysis
Dr. Ferreira December 14, 2023
There are two kinds of statistics in psychology, descriptive and inferential. Descriptive statistics summarize and describe a set of data. I am going to focus on inferential statistics. Inferential statistics allow researchers to draw conclusions from the data the descriptive statistics describe. When you use inferential statistics, you take data from samples and make population generalizations. In other words, it is a practice of using samples of data and making predictions about a larger sample data sample or population. Hypothesis testing is a good example of inferential statistics. The population and sample are two important parts of inferential statistics. The sample is the individuals used for the study. The population is defined as the entire group the researcher wants to conclude about. The population sample contains characteristics of the population and represents the population. Inferential statistics are used to discover a property or general pattern about a large group by studying smaller groups of people, hoping that the smaller group will generalize to the larger group. “Inferential statistics describe the many ways in which statistics derived from observations on samples from study populations can be used to decide whether or not those populations are truly different” (Hemmings, H., & Hopkins, P., 2006). In the easiest terms, inferential statistics are scientist-used techniques used to summarize the characteristics of a data set. “Using inferential statistics an individual can conclude how a population has been affected or what a population may think by taking sample data” (Cozzolino,
J., 2015 to 2023). Inferential statistics are used to make estimates about a large population and draw conclusions from the data based on testing the hypothesis. Inferential statistics are important in Psychology. This is because they provide understanding and answers when there is large data, variables, and information. It helps psychologists to generalize about a large population based on a tested sample that has the same characteristics as the population. Plus, it helps them make better decisions about their well-being and health (Steinberg, W., & Price, M., 2020).
