For each artifact, think of it as a piece of “evidence” that demonstrates your understanding and application of the student learning outcome (SLO). For each artifact, you need to provide an explanation of the artifact and a justification. Template
1.Course Number and Title
List the course number and title. (Example: TEL 510: Instructional Design, Planning and Assessment)
TEL 502: Exploration of Education: Child/ Adolescent Development
and Foundations of Special Education
2. Student Learning Outcome (SLO)
Write out the student learning outcome you
are addressing. (The SLO can be found directly in the course syllabus.)
SLO 1. Describe the philosophical, historical, and legal foundations
of special education and to develop learning that supports all students learning outcomes.
3. Explanation (3-5 sentences) Explain the artifact/evidence you are submitting to demonstrate your learning of the student learning outcome listed above. As you prepare your statement, consider how the artifact/evidence meets the SLO. I chose to submit a presentation to demonstrate my understanding of the SLO above. My presentation is from the viewpoint of a teacher or educator trying to help parents and/or community members understand what special education is. I believe I met the criteria of the SLO because I
went over the history and legal foundations of special education including the major details of how students and parents are protected and what resources are available to them. 4. Artifact(s)
Provide the artifact(s)/evidence of your understanding and application of the SLO from the list provided in Canvas. Artifacts/evidence may include images, video, written documents, etc. Provide direct links to the artifacts, as appropriate. https://www.canva.com/design/DAFsfNssdNs/

5. Justification (two written paragraphs or a 2-3 minute video)
Choose one or more for your justification of
how this artifact/evidence demonstrates evidence for the SLO. ●
How did applying this student learning outcome guide your future
decisions/practices?
●
How has the application of the student learning outcome impacted
your teaching practices/learning?
●
How will this learning experience support your practice in the future?
Explain. ●
What challenges did you experience in demonstrating this student learning outcome? How did you overcome/address those challenges? ●
What might be your next step to continue to deepen your learning related to this student learning I chose a presentation style artifact to present my knowledge of the SLO #1: Historical and Legal Foundations of Special Education. I created this presentation in the hopes that someone who was unfamiliar with Special Education would have a better understanding after looking through it and not be so lost. As an educator, during my first year of teaching I wish this presentation was something someone would have shown me or would have been available for parents who are unfamiliar with how the school systems and education laws can be of support for special education students. This learning experience will truly support my practice in the future as I now feel more aware of how the laws work in regards to special education students and what support systems can be put into place for them. I am currently a high school dance teacher and in my classroom I have had the opportunity to work with special education students. Working with the students is phenomenal but I found that I was lost when attending IEP meetings and not understanding where the data was being pulled from or what specifically the case managers were looking for. By working through this SLO, I was able to gain a better understanding of these laws and where the basis of an IEP or 504 plan derives from. In future IEP meetings, I will use this knowledge to help me understand the IEP and what services can be implemented in my classroom to better help the student. One of the challenges I experienced in demonstrating this student learning outcome was trying to understand what information a parent might like to know. I myself am not a parent, so it was hard to determine which information would be of value and which information might be overwhelming. Though there is a lot of information in my presentation, I overcame this challenge by sticking with the facts instead of inserting my opinion. This way a parent or anyone else being shown this presentation could understand the history of special education and develop their own
outcome to support your professional growth? Explain. questions from there. I hope to continue learning about the history of special education in this course and how it has progressed so I can be of better support to my special education students and parents.
