Lens Exploration - Multiculturalism
Describe your existing knowledge about your topic in diversity.
Multiculturalism is a concept that recognises and values the coexistence of multiple
cultural groups within a single society or community. It promotes the idea that diverse
cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and practices should be respected and given equal recognition.
Multiculturalism emphasizes inclusivity and aims to create societies where individuals from
different cultural backgrounds can live together harmoniously. Apply the history lens to your topic.
From a historical perspective, multiculturalism has roots in the recognition of cultural
diversity throughout human civilization. Ancient empires such as the Roman Empire,
Byzantine Empire, and Ottoman Empire incorporated various ethnic and cultural groups
within their territories. However, the modern concept of multiculturalism emerged primarily
in the 20th century as a response to increased migration and globalization.
In the aftermath of World War II, many Western countries experienced significant
waves of immigration from former colonies and other regions. These migrations led to the
formation of multicultural societies, where people from diverse cultural backgrounds lived
together. Policies promoting multiculturalism aimed to address the challenges and
opportunities associated with cultural diversity, striving for social integration while
respecting cultural identities and promoting equality. (Anonyme,

1-2 Lens Exploration
The humanities lens explores the cultural, artistic, and intellectual aspects of
multiculturalism. It recognizes the contributions of different cultural groups to the enrichment
of society through their unique perspectives, traditions, literature, arts, and philosophies.
Multiculturalism encourages cultural exchange and dialogue, fostering understanding and
appreciation for diverse cultures. (Beachum,
Diversity and multiculturalism
2020)
Literature and the arts often reflect multiculturalism through works that explore
themes of identity, belonging, and cultural hybridity. These works give voice to marginalized
communities, challenge dominant narratives, and broaden our understanding of human
experiences. Through the humanities lens, multiculturalism invites us to engage with diverse
cultural expressions and examine the complex dynamics of power, representation, and social
justice. (Longley,
What is multiculturalism? definition, theories, and examples
2020)
Apply the natural and applied sciences lens to your topic.
The natural and applied sciences lens examines multiculturalism from a scientific
standpoint. It explores the biological, genetic, and anthropological dimensions of human
diversity. Scientific research reveals the genetic and physiological variations among different
population groups, emphasizing both the commonalities and differences in our biological
makeup.
Anthropological studies shed light on the diverse cultural practices, social structures,
and belief systems of various communities worldwide. Multiculturalism acknowledges and
values this diversity, recognizing that cultural differences are not determined by biological
factors but are shaped by historical, social, and environmental contexts. (
