E2 Notes Abigail’s qualities based on her letter: Religious Smart Opinionated Persuasive Self-sufficient Independent Political Patriotic Social Abigail’s qualities based on the film: Motherly Housewife Demanding Hermit Self reliant Passive / submissive Brave Fearful
Sample thesis statements: Thesis statement should include qualities from letters and film. (Sample: Whereas Abigail is x, y, and z in the letters, she is r, s, and t in the film . Another sample: In both the letters and the film Abigail was x and y; however, where in the letters Abigail was z, she was s in the film ) In her letters, Abigail focuses on social interaction, collection of intel, and opinionated political rhetoric whilst in the film she gives off an aura of solitude, a mother, and simply trying to survive at the mercy of others. The qualities Abigail shows in the letters and films are her motherliness and religious values; however, the letters show her as opinionated versus the film portraying her as vulnerable. Abigail is represented as an independent person in both the letters and the film; yet, in the letters, she is viewed as opinionated and intelligent, whereas in the film, she is perceived as more motherly and quiet. In the letters she is religious, independent, and patriotic; however, the film depicts her as reliant, vulnerable, and the stereotypical mother. Abigail is contradicted between the letters and the film from independent to quiet, fearless to submissive, and from outspoken to housewife. Although in her letters Abigail is referred to as dominant, forward thinking, and religious; the film portrays her as passive and political. Although in the letters Abigail is intelligent, dominant, and politically educated, the film portrays her in a way where her motherly qualities take more of a hold, as well as more passive and recluse.
