Page 1 To answer the question I am presented with, I must first understand what Moral Relativism is. Moral relativism is the idea that no universal or absolute set of ethical principles exists. It's a version of morality that advocates "to each her own," and those who follow it say, "Who am I to judge?" The terms "moral relativism" and "ethical relativism" refer to several philosophical viewpoints addressing the disparities in moral standards among various peoples and cultures. A relativist is a common term for a supporter of such concepts. The first argument for Moral Relativism is universal morality, a code of right and wrong that unites all existence. This can easily be disproven. They assert that by framing immoral behaviors as cultural values, such as slavery or genocide, moral relativism allows for them to be carried out. The second argument that can be made against Moral Relativism has to do with the cultural relativism aspect. According to the theory of cultural relativism, "culture has various standards, and those constitute morality." The difficulty that most people identify with many distinct cultures, some of which may have opposing values, is raised by this viewpoint while simultaneously offering a solution to the problem of direction. Moral absolutism is the opposite of moral relativism and holds that some ethical standards apply to everyone and can be used to evaluate everyone's behavior. Deontology is a type of it. But there will always be sharp disagreements over which moral principles are correct and which are Page 2
intrinsically alter the fact that something is right or wrong. It also argues that these realities may have a legal, intellectual, psychological, or religious foundation. According to absolutism, moral standards remain constant regardless of the circumstances, including the persons involved, place, and time. Relativism places a greater emphasis on the virtue of tolerance than absolutism does. In contrast to relativism, absolutism asserts that moral principles are inherently good or bad. Absolutism is more closely associated with religion than relativism is. Absolutism has the advantage of being able to analyze the morality of a situation critically, but relativism has the advantage of taking into account gray regions. The drawback of relativism is that it could reduce what is ethically correct to just being socially acceptable, but the problem of absolutism is that it ignores context. Major categories exist in relativism, but none do in absolutism. Relativism takes into account consequences as opposed to absolutism. Absolutism and relativism are simply two philosophical ideas on moral standards.
