La Historia Uncovered: Episode 1 is a discussion between Julissa Arce, author and creator of the La Historia Uncovered series, and Dr. Paul Ortiz, a professor of history at the University of Florida, regarding the history of Latinos. I did not know much about Latino history, so this was not only interesting, but eye opening to me. Most Latinos are not educated on the history of their people. This is sad, because they are missing a part of their heritage and culture from this. If they knew about their ancestors, they would have more confidence in who they are as Latino people and be proud of their heritage. It does not make sense that they are not being taught the history of their ancestors. I have always been taught all through school about the Founding Fathers of the United States and their importance to our history. I have known slavery was a big part of American history and there is not much there of which to be proud. It was made clear that Jefferson, Adams and Hamilton despised people of color and they fully planned to further their white supremacy agenda. They planned African Americans to be slaves and Latinos to surely be treated as second class citizens. They did not intend in any way for them to be able to participate in society equally. I was distraught to learn non-whites were referred to as ”savages“ for no good reason. I did not realize white supremacy was the main goal the revolution and that slavery was propelled by it. I am proud to be an American, but I am not proud of the history of American as far as slavery. I do understand the economy was dependent on slavery, but it is disappointing that this country supported that. I am not a prejudiced person. I believe all men are created equal and the color of a person’s skin does not make any difference to who they are as a person. Therefore, I found this to be disheartening. Much of this was about racism and racism is still a major issue today. Ms. Arce referred to Latinos as oppressed but also said that in relation to African Americans that Latinos are the oppressors. It was interesting to me to learn that liberation began in Haiti and that through this, they gave hope to others. I had no idea that Latin America is a great example of how to improve democracy and how to have true liberation. There is obviously a lot in Latino history to be proud of. It is not only sad that Latinos are not taught their ancestorial heritage, but that all are not taught it. Dr. Ortiz told a story about how when he was young, he and other children with brown or black skin, would have a white wig on them and they would have to play the role of white famous people in history like Hamilton. Much is focused on Unites States history because that is where we are. But it did bother him to have to always play the role of a white person as a child. It would be nice to be able to celebrate important and heroic people in history from all cultures. People want to be accepted for who they are. It would be nice if we could live in a world like that.
