Presentation Draft Johnathan M. Brake HUM200 1. Overview In this presentation, I will discuss racism, and social inequalities, specifically against African Americans. We will investigate these injustices through the works of many different authors, mainly, "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", by Dr. Martin Luther King, and "The Blacker the Berry", by acclaimed rapper Kendrick Lamar. At its core, the humanities is trying to understand why people do what they do. We will work to discover a root cause of racism and social inequalities endured by African Americans in our country, including police brutality. 2. Impact the Audience The theme of racism and social injustices can impact anyone who is willing to listen. In "The Blacker the Berry", Kendrick states "You hate me don't you? You hate my people, your plan is to terminate my culture... You vandalize my perception but can't take style from me... You sabotage my community, makin' a killin'." He is talking about legislation that does not help minority communities, police brutality, and politicians who politicize the struggles African American communities. My intended audience is really anyone who will listen, but my goal is for people who don't believe in systemic racism, or other social injustices that minorities encounter daily to hear my message, and hopefully make our country equal place to live for all. 3. Evidence "Injustices anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere", Dr. Martin Luther King in "A Letter From a Birmingham Jail". Those infamous words were written by Dr. King in 1963, from his jail cell in Birmingham, Al, where he was arrested for peacefully protesting broken promises by city officials. Dr. King was arrested nearly 30 times in his life for protesting, and standing up for 1

what's right, he also gave the ultimate sacrifice: his life. As I stated, this letter was written in 1963, "The Blacker the Berry" was written in 2015, 62 years later. 62 years later, and African American communities are still having the same or very similar struggles that Dr. King wrote about from inside that jail cell. The injustices need to be preached to the masses, who is my target audience. The impact of these injustices doesn't just effect lower income minority communities, it impacts the development of our nation as a whole. 4. Personally I am a white male, married to a black woman. Regardless of my wifes race, I'm tired of hearing of injustices against those who's skin color is different than mine. I'm tired of hearing my black friends tell stories about how they fear for their life when they see police officers. I'm tired of hearing about unarmed African Americans being shot down in the streets with no justice being had. I'm tired of not seeing justice for Breonna Taylor, Emitt Till, George Floyd, Atatinana Jefferson, Aura Rosser, Stephon Clark, Botham Jean, Philando Castille, Alton Sterling, Michelle Cusseaux, Freddie Gray, Janisha Fonville, Eric Garner, Akai Gurley, Gabriella Nuvarez, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Tanisha Anderson, and many, many more who have lost their lives unjustly in this country. One day, I plan to have kids. This isn't the environment I want to raise my children in. I don't want my children to grow up fearing the police, or whether or not they will receive a loan for a house, get a good job, or many other things simply because of the color of their skin, or because they "don't look like me". 5. Studying the Humanities I believe that studying the humanities can have a profound impact on my chosen subject, which, in turn will make my personal and professional life immensely better.
