1 Unit 5 Reflection Assignment Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Athabasca University PSYC300: Theories of Career Development Tutor: Louis Svenningsen August 31, 2023
2 Part I: Activity Introduction: The reflection assignment is divided into two main parts. The first part is an activity that focuses on the life-space exercise, as outlined by Peavy's SocioDynamic Counselling. The second part is a critique and reflection section, which includes both client and practitioner perspectives on the exercise's benefits, insights, advantages, disadvantages, and a theoretical interpretation.
3 Part I: Exercise The main benefit from the client's perspective is the ability to create a high-level visualization of one’s life. This has the additional benefit of enabling the client to consider what “life balance” means to them. That is, when considering one’s career – this exercise allows the client to see how the other parts of life fit in, where there may be imbalance and what aspects of life are driving that. The holistic view noted above may bring clarity to decision-making and direction. The ability to literally “see” one’s career life can provide a further understanding of how work/school/personal responsibility fit together and what potential steps may be. For example, if a client is unhappy with their work, this exercise can help to understand why that may be and whether that may mean making career choices such as looking for different employment or even returning to re-tool skills. A potential downside for a client is that it may lead to over-planning one’s career – particularly if trying to plan all aspects of life and those aspects do not pan out as initially expected. This may result in this moving from an exercise focused primarily on career planning to an activity that results in negative emotions and an inability to deliver on a plan or map. Part II: Critique / Reflection Client Perspective – Benefits & Insights From the perspective of a client, a particularly critical benefit is the Practitioner Perspective – Advantages & Disadvantages
