Name: Shakir Ali Date: 10/11/23 Questions for E.B. White’s “Once More to the Lake” 1. Describe White’s attitude in the opening paragraphs of this essay. - White’s attitude in the opening paragraph conveys a sense of nostalgia and fondness of the past. 2. Identify at least one appeal to each of the five senses and explain the effect of each. Sight: The appeal to sight is when White clearly describes the old memories of the lake and the things surrounding it such as the woods and thee cottages. Sound: The appeal of sound is described by describing the sounds of motor boats on the lake. In the present, it was described that the unfamiliar nervous sound of the outboard motors of the boats would break the illusion of nostalgia but in the past, the author describes the motors of the boat being able to create a sedative noise, and was also an ingredient of summer sleep. Smell: The appeal of smell starts with the first smell of the pine-laden air when they first arrive at the lake. When they arrived at their bedroom in the cottage, the author describes how the bedroom smelled of lumber and the scent of wet woods was smelled throughout the bedroom. Touch: The appeal of touch is described in this passage describing the sensation of wet swim trunks after swimming in the lake in the rain, which gives a sense of physical connection to the reader. Taste: There isn't a direct appeal to the sense of taste in this passage but, the mention of "doughnuts dipped in sugar" provides an indirect connection to the sense of taste by bringing up memories of familiar flavors from the past. 3. Circle and count the “and”s in the essay. What is the effect of their use? - There are a total of 157 “and”s in this passage. The effect of the use of “and”s in the essay emphasizes the connections of the author's memories and experiences with their dad in comparison to their son. It reflects the flow of thoughts and emotions as White revisits the lake, finding similarities of what they did with their father like fishing and experiencing the cottage on the side of the lake. 4. Try to describe the impact of the essay’s final paragraph. What’s White’s epiphany? How is it conveyed to the reader? - White's epiphany that he and his son are linked by shared history and memories to a continuous line of generations. The reader is made aware that the lake is still a constant and that time hasn't really changed it at all. White appreciates nature's eternal beauty and feels a strong bond with his father and son like White had with their own father as a result of their shared experiences at the lake. 5. What is the overall tone of White’s essay? Explain your choice. Be specific.
- White's passage has a tone of reflective nostalgia. The tradition of father and son going to the lake, experiencing the same experience as the last one is both peaceful and saddening as he grapples with time's passage and the changes it brings while valuing his family's traditions and capturing the beauty of the lake.
