Emiliano Saenz Follow-on Service Project Proposal The Gilman scholarship is a fantastic opportunity that provides students with the means to study abroad. However, only few students know of the scholarship, and studying abroad remains a dream for many while making it a reality is only an application away. I work at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley at the Student Union. The Student Union oversees hosting events for new and returning students for fun and information. Career and internship expos have been held to inform students and increase applications. My follow-on service project would be to host a Travel abroad scholarship expo and notify students of all cultures and backgrounds of the fantastic opportunities that Gilman gives to travel abroad. Using the impact of my experience abroad, I will answer students' questions about studying abroad and address their concerns about being in a different country alone. When I first was debating about applying to study abroad, I had many questions about what it would be like to study abroad and stay in another country; having a speaker at an event to answer questions would have been much appreciated on my part, and I hope to be able to provide that for future Gilman applicants. Advertising the Travel Abroad scholarship expo allows me to target all students equally since the Student Union is the heart of the campus and is constantly filled with students of all classifications. Although I would target all students, I would focus on the first- and second-year students since they are new to the campus and need to be aware of the opportunities provided. The Student Union works closely with many clubs, such as the men’s soccer club and the rock- climbing club, which I am a part of. My connections with these clubs will allow me to inform the members of the clubs. As soccer players, many of us would jump at an opportunity to attend another country and admire the landscape and cultural backgrounds where some of our favorite professional players grew up. My follow-on service project would aim to increase awareness of the study abroad and Gilman Program within the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley student body. The Gilman scholarship is an opportunity of a lifetime and helping to inform others on how to accomplish their dreams of studying abroad is what I intend to do. The Travel Abroad Scholarship Expo will allow students to ask all their questions and inform them of the steps needed to apply for the Gilman Scholarships and study abroad programs.
