Learning Activity 1:
I designed a classroom for preschool ages 3-5. I modeled it after a classroom I used to
teach it with some slight modifications that I would have made if possible. I designed this
classroom with the 3 key factors of development in mind, cognitive, psychological and motor
skills. I wanted to create a classroom that had some moving concepts, like storage cabinets that
bins could be changed out or furniture on wheels such as the tables and sensory tables, therefore
certain parts of the space could be changed/rotated to best adapt to the needs of the classroom.
The main areas I have are, literary/art, dramatic play, blocks and learning. I also wanted to create
a safe calming, warm, learning space, doing so with the book space I hope the children can use
the space to decompress or take some needed relaxation space. I also provided a teacher space in
the area, a small reserved desk in the corner for the teacher to use to plan, assess and use as
additional storage. I find this space to be critical as this is also the teacher’s classroom and they
need a space within the space. It’s also critical to help lesson plan or grade.
Starting with the literary/art areas, I wanted to create a cozy, safe, inviting safe for
reading. I have included a fuzzy rug and bean bag, I placed this area in the corner as I wanted the
reading space to also be a calm down, stress reliving space. Since reading is usually a quiet
activity, I think this is perfect, the area can be used for alone/quiet time while reading. There is
also a large window facing the street that brings in natural calm lighting. Next to the reading
space I placed the art station, including a desk to sit at and a hanging art easel, arts and crafts can
be also be seen as calmer quieter activity, so it only felt fitting to place it near the cozy space.
Next is dramatic play space, including a play kitchen, baby dolls and accessories and dress up
clothes. I gave this area a bigger space in the classroom, considering there are multiple aspects
and children are actively using their imagination in this area I wanted them to have space to act. I
also have the kitchen moveable therefore the space can be adjusted as needed. The storage
cabinets while aren’t moveable the contents within them are, being able to rotate out costumes or
dolls, possibly removing the kitchen all together if the current lesson needs it. This was a
common practice in my old classroom, so I love the flexibility.
Next is the block area, this area can be become loud and messy quickly which is why I gave it its
own space, blocks are meant to be built, throw around, knocked over, but I also do not want this
space to interrupt others. The idea of the wrap around shelf with the blocks is ideal because it
keeps the blocks in a limited area and the children can easily access them and put them away
need be.
Finally, the learning areas, these are in two different locations in the classroom. First, we have
the sensory table, I placed this next to the bathroom considering sensory tables can be messy
have a sink to clean up after. The table however is on wheels so it can be easily moved around
the classroom as needed. The manipulatives bucket is placed in the middle of classroom so
children have the option of where to play with them, the rug, table, dramatic play area, etc.
