Milestone Three
By Christina Comellas
The elements that place the work in its period are that it was used to entertain an audience in a dance-like manner. It premiered in Milan on April 8th, 1876, it was done with a balletic dance scene. It was done
in the romantic period that ranged from 1820-1900. The romantic period had some popular artists who were Franz Liszt and Johannes Brahms.
The pieces that were popular during this time was Chopin’s Nocturnes and Liszt’s “La Campanella.” The romantic era in music was defined
by imagination and emotions. The
music had qualities of enchantment, ebbing and flowing, strength, wondrous, and mystifying. This era rebelled against the belief that music, art, and literature should be used
for intelligence alone. This era is what started
the type of music we see today that evokes our feelings. Without this era there would be no emotion in music and art and only used for the intellectual
. There would be no music in movies to create a sense of wonderment, fear, joy, or sorrow. For example, the movie Jaws, the movies of this saga wouldn’t have the iconic danger song as it has when the great white shark appears. Music wouldn’t be as popular as it is now if not for this era, as it would’ve most likely just
been for learning
and for church. The genre of music that was popular during this time was full, conservative, and regional. The composer was Ponchielli, and he did a lot of different pieces from band music, operas, and solo piano pieces.
He was also a teacher of composition at Milan Conservatory in Via Conservatorio, 12, 20100 Milano MI, Italy. The dance of the hours was done
for an opera called La Gioconda. The opera was about a man named Alvise, he was the head of the inquisition, he was invited
to be entertainment for a Venetian nobility in his palace. His dance represents the difficulty between
good and evil. After his performance
he shows the body of his dead wife whom he killed to poisoning for the infidelity. The dance of the hours represents five parts of the day which are dawn, day, dusk, night, and the return of the morning.
