Violence and Prevention Programs Dillen Render College of Humanities and Social Science: Grand Canyon University JUS-445: Justice Problem Analysis November 26, 2023 Professor Christopher Crockett The “Becoming a Man” violence prevention program and “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative are programs structured for the youth to stay on the right path and out of trouble. Both
programs reach out to people of color because African Amercians are affected the most by problems like gun violence and lack of support. Former President Barack Obama has a huge impact on both programs since he is an exceptional role model and supportive leader. It’s essential to have a successful leader, especially one that looks like you, to show that anything is possible and achievable. Some individuals don’t get the opportunity to even meet the president, so to engage in conversations about life can go a long way for someone. “Becoming a Man” is a behavioral science-informed initiative with the goal of decreasing the prevalence of these reflexive behaviors, which affect us all but can have deadly consequences in economically depressed areas with high gun crime rates. In 2001, it originated in Chicago because as a community we thought maybe offering non-academic can decrease violence and improve students well-being overall. Through the years, other communities realized how much this program is affecting the younger generation. Therefore schools like: Los Angeles Unified School District in California, Chicago Public Schools in Illinois, Boston Public Schools in Massachusetts, and many more have taken this program and inputted it into their system. According to the University of Chicago, the first study found that BAM reduced violent crime arrests by fully 45% . Additionally, they also found that BAM increased the graduation rate of high school students by 19%. The second study found that BAM significantly increased student participation in school and decreased violent crime arrests by an entire 50%. This program clearly shows that it is helping the younger generation, so we should add programs like such in our schools across the U.S (Univ. of Chicago, 2023). “My Brother’s Keeper” was launched by former President Obama due to the killing of Trayvon Martin back in 2014. The initiative's stated goal was to ensure that all youth can reach their full potential by closing the ongoing disparities in opportunities that boys and young men of color face. Understanding that most African American boys/men deal with either poverty, lack of discipline, without a two-parent household, or even pursue crime is essential. Studies have shown that positive changes may be made in the lives of black boys and young men when leaders in the community, participants, and private and public organizations all work together toward the same ends. Since the organization launched 8 years ago, hundreds of other communities across the world have benefited from MBK. African American Male Achievement (AAMA) is a program offered by the organization in Oakland, California. The curriculum places an emphasis on social-emotional growth and culturally appropriate courses, and it is taught by black male educators. Researchers Thomas Dee and Emily Penner used 12 years of data from the Oakland Unified School District to conduct a quasi-experimental analysis to determine if this strategy had increased student persistence ( Rachel Grich, 2020). Dee and Penner found that the average dropout rate for black male students is 43% lower than it was before the program was implemented. If kids in the beginning stages of high school had access to the program, the on- time high school graduation rate may rise by 3.2 percentage points. ( Rachel Grich, 2020). These findings highlight the need of implementing evidence-based school improvement initiatives that
