2 Educator as Servant Leader: Living and Modeling a Christian Worldview as a Reflective Practitioner Learning Environment, Content Knowledge A learning environment is typically what a student experiences while in the educational setting regarding social interaction among peers, cultural interactions, and psychological interactions. The learning environment is arguably the most crucial part of the learner's experience and can determine the outcome of standards a student meets. The content knowledge is what a teacher must understand to be able to teach their students so they can grasp the standards in question. If the teacher can create an acceptable learning environment and be proficient in understanding and instructing content knowledge, the class will have a great outcome. Professional Knowledge Base – Learning Environment The learning environment is key to student success for many reasons. In the United States, the learning environment tends to be student-based, this allows for a deeper connection between student and teacher. According to Ryan Francis O. Cayubit, “The relationships between students and teachers and the relationships among friends and peers within classrooms guide how students learn, individual development, and well-being.” The way a classroom is put together, desks in straight rows front to back compared to having students in groups of four or sitting in group tables can change the learning environment tremendously. While discussing the learning environment, it is hard not to mention the social and psychological impact that it has on students. According to Ulla Saastamoinen, “children named bullying and anxieties about school as the most stressful factors challenging their emotional
3 mental health.” Controlling the learning environment can help students from being bullied and can focus on content. The United States is one of the most diverse countries and there are many cultural and religious practices that students follow. Culturally, students in the United States pledge allegiance to the flag and that is something not done in other countries. Something that students are taught in the United States is to keep all attention and focus on the teacher while in many other countries, students are instructed to not make eye contact, and in some classrooms, there are so many students that it feels more like a college lecture in an auditorium than a typical class in the United States. The Learning environment a student experiences is extremely crucial and can determine how well a student does in their educational journey. Application to Practice – Learning Environment In the United States, the learning environment for secondary students is student-focused and leads to more one-on-one time compared to places like China and many European countries. Teachers can create positive learning environments if they make sure the students know that they are in an encouraging and safe place. As teachers, we have to figure out what best works for our classroom at the time because there is no single class that is the same as the next and what works for one will not work for the other. For example, one classroom might benefit from group learning while the next classroom might benefit from a more individualized approach. One of the most concerning things that students face is bullying. Bullying is an epidemic in our society. However, in the learning environment, we as teachers need to step up and be there for our students when someone is being bullied. There are many ways to handle bullying and having a zero-tolerance policy and making sure it is used is key to students feeling safe in your

4 learning environment. Make sure the students feel safe in your classroom and don’t contribute to “joking around” even if it does seem innocent, we never know what the student is going through. While there are many different cultures in the United States something that students from foreign countries have to get acquainted with is the pledge of allegiance that starts our day. In public schools, we may not be able to discuss religion in many settings. However, we can be kind and through our actions, instruct in a biblical manner. Proverbs 22:6 says “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Creating a positive learning environment through practice will stick with the students and they will get a lot out of it even if it means very little at the time. Professional Knowledge Base – Content Knowledge Content Knowledge is what a teacher should know about a subject and how they explain it to others. Teaching history, would not only teach history, would also include multiple subjects such as reading and writing so the student grasps the content and masters the objective. Application to Practice – Content Knowledge A discussion correlated to EACH of the paragraphs presented in the professional knowledge base that provides specific examples of how the key ideas are implemented in the classroom. New key ideas are NOT introduced in Application to Practice. Christian Worldview Integration Proverbs 22:6 says “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Your Christian worldview is to be integrated throughout the Professional Knowledge Base and/or the Application in Practice. Identify a theme that conveys a unifying thread throughout these two topics and your response. Incorporate scriptural references (at least 2) that support your
5 identified theme. (Note” A “verse of the week” approach to this section is insufficient for meeting the requirements of developing a theme. Select passages and verses that illuminate your identified theme. References Cayubit, R. F. O. (2022). Why learning environment matters? 6 References When including your references, remember that if a citation requires more than one line in order for you to include all required information, you are to double-space that citation. Double space everything, just like I’m doing with this annoying message. Reminder – Word tries to be smarter than the human who is using the program, so it automatically inserts spaces before and/or after paragraphs. Be sure you turn that OFF or you’ll have too much space between your citations like I do above. Author, A. A. (Year). Title of book . Publisher. Author, A. A., Author, B. B., & Author, C. C. (Year).
