Heartland Documentary Reflection
The heartland documentary was a heartbreaking an eye-opening telling of the tragedy that
ensued Joplin, Missouri. I have lived in Kansas City, Missouri my entire life, and hearing about
these horrible tornados does come close to comparing watching how it flipped these peoples
lives upside down. In the Midwest we have become very desensitized to tornados because we
have warnings so often. It is why on social media there’s jokes about how when the sirens go off,
inside of seeking shelter, many go outside to look at what the commotion is about and see if they
can see any tornados. Initially I thought this tornado was just a regular type of tornado that blew
down a few public buildings and houses. I had no idea the severity of the wreckage, all the lives
lost, people injured, trauma, and many beloved belongings gone forever. However, what
surprised me more was the lack of health literacy in emergency preparedness and listening to the
professionals who warned of this terrible storm.
This film initially engaged and interested me because Joplin is only a 2.5-hour drive
south of Kansas City, making it very relevant and “close” to me. However, as I continued to
watch, I felt myself becoming more and more invested in the story of these people. The story that
stood the most out to me was the nurse who was working in the hospital as the tornado hit, and
the guilt she felt knowing she could move to safety, but her patients couldn’t and died because of
it. As a future health care professional, dedicated my career to helping others is something I look
forward to, and experiencing what the nurse did would shatter me.
This story made me take a step back and realize how much importance I place on
material possessions, when life is so much bigger than these items. Those affected in Joplin lost
all their possessions, all their pictures, years of memories, and even loved ones in an instant. It
makes me reevaluate my priorities in life, and how much I value things over people and
